Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education is the mode of education that use information and communications technology to support, enhance, and optimise the delivery of information.
Information and communication technologies are currently being used in education to assist students to learn more effectively by providing teachers with access to a wide range of new pedagogy. These technologies are also being used to enable teachers to do administrative tasks more efficiently. Teachers in every setting need to be able to use multiple technologies sources to support their teaching practice. Specifically, they are expected to use technology:
- For teaching and for presenting their ideas and subject content. One example to be considered is the use of interactive whiteboard.
- For learning. Pupil assessment can be enriched with material of networked areas in the system. Therefore, the students can take the responsibility for their own learning.
- For supporting teachers’ skills to record, keeping a log and monitoring students’ progress.
- For teachers’ continuous professional development through professional networks and other associations.
This course emphasizes on how important is ICT (Information and communication technology) in education by analysing the areas where ICT can be used.
What will I learn?
This course covers the integration of ICT in a learning and teaching context and examines different ICT models. More specifically, it covers the definitions and benefits of applets and virtual manipulatives, the impact of ICT when applied to teaching and learning, along with its affordances and associated challenges, and the influence of the internet on our lives and on the educational sector.
WEEK 1: Learning through Technology and ICT models
This week covers the history of ICT, the integration of ICT in a learning and teaching context and presents the different ICT models.
WEEK 2: Practical Applications of applets and virtual manipulative in Learning
This week covers the definitions and benefits of applets and virtual manipulative and their implementation on the learning and teaching process
WEEK 3: Online Learning, affordances and challenges of ICT applications in teaching and learning
This week covers the concept of online and blended learning, the impact of ICT applications in teaching and learning along with its affordances and associated challenges.
WEEK 4: Internet and Society
This week covers the influence of the Internet in our lives and in Education and focuses on Cybercrimes and the safety on the Internet.
